Recreation
Main Entry: rec·re·a·tion
Pronunciation: \ˌre-krē-ˈā-shən\
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English recreacion, from Anglo-French, from Latin recreation-, recreatio restoration to health, from recreare to create anew, restore, refresh, from re- + creare to create
Recreation has come to be interpreted as fun/hobby/activity. Today has been a reflection of it’s true meaning to me though… Simple physical activity is not what truly restores and refreshes. Enjoyable, yes. Distracting, absolutely. Entertaining, entirely.
Sometimes I mistakenly fill the voids with simple busyness; with activities, with work, with deadlines, with commitments, with errands, with goals, with friends, with family. There are so many things that can temporarily fill the cries of my soul that can only be ultimately satisfied by one thing. God alone.
I was reading Ecc. 3 this morning about how “everything has a time and a season…”. None of these things are wrong that fill our lives, all have their times and places. The problem comes when we try to silence the cries of our hearts for God with other things. I’m just preaching to myself here…
